Haley holds a cat named Sammy close to a new intake dog to see how it reacts. While letting the two animals sit in a room together, Haley takes photos of the dog to post to a website called PetPoint. These photos verify that the dog is available to adopt.
Haley administers medicine to a kitten who was infected with a parasite called Giardia. The parasite causes animals to suffer from diarrhea, and is contagious if humans make contact with it.
Haley mingles with Blob, an orange cat who's one of the longest residents of Bowling Green Humane Society. Cats who stay at the adoption center for a long time always reside in a glass enclosure next to the front doors.
Volunteer Carolyn walks an excited dog through the outskirts of the Bowling Green Humane Society. She worked with animals in the past, but this is her first time volunteering in this shelter.
Volunteer Matt kneels and consoles a nervous dog named Willow. The dog took several minutes before warming up to the other animals in the area. "I literally had to drag her out," says Matt. "I had to pick her up and carry her out."
Leo inspects a kennel housing another dog. "Every day we get animals who don't cooperate," says Haley. "Sometimes we'll have to make hard decisions with the animals, but that's up to the manager."
