Chris Bishop, 41, has been clean from drugs for 18 years. His wife, Kayla Bishop, has been clean for 2 years. Chris and Kayla met online through Facebook and connected after Chris posted in honor of his 17th year of sobriety. At the time, Kayla was less than a year sober and lived in California, while Chris lived in Kentucky.
After about 8 months of being friends online, Kayla moved to Bowling Green Kentucky to move in with Chris.
“It inspired me so much because you don’t normally see double digits. I didn’t know this man, but it gave me hope and faith in myself that I can reach double digits one day” said Kayla.

Something else that they both had in common was their love for tattooing. Chris had been tattooing for 17 years at the time, when Kayla had only a few months of tattoo experience. After Kayla moved to Kentucky, Chris started to apprentice her.
“Kayla helped me not only with recovery, but she made me want to be a better man, a better dad, and be better at everything. I have lots of reasons to be sober, but another one I just her man. I want to be around as long as I can to spend the rest of my life with her.” Said Chris.

For Kayla, moving to Kentucky was the start of a new life for her in many ways. She had just hit a year of sobriety, started tattooing full time, met the love of her life, and became a stepmom to Chris’s kids.
“Going from never having kids and then turning into a stepmom overnight was a huge change.” said Kayla.

“They have definitely taught me a lot in life. A lot of patience, a lot of maturing, and a different way to look at life. They make me feel like a kid again. I enjoy the little things more because they get so excited about little things. Those are my boys, and I wouldn’t choose anyone else because they are my buddies.” Kayla said.
Chris and Kayla are constant reminders for each other to stay on top of what keeps them healthy and happy. One quote that they remind each other of is “I love you; I see you”. They say this to remind one another how far they have come. Something else that they remind each other of is to “count your steps” which symbolizes the twelve steps that you go through during sobriety programs.

About 3 years ago, Kayla relapsed after being a month sober. She called her sponsor and stayed with them for about a week. During that week all Kayla did was watch the Star Wars Trilogy’s with her sponsor. Kayla has been sober since then. After that experience, Star Wars became a huge interest of hers.

“There’s more to being sober than just not doing drugs or drinking and shit. Addicts at the core are selfish. We just have to remember to work our steps, not think about ourselves, and be patient.” Chris said.

During Chris’s addiction he weighed almost 300 pounds which made him very self-conscious and led to his addiction getting worse. Once Chris decided to get clean, he also chose to lose weight to add onto his new journey in life. Since then, Chris has started an online mentoring business where he gives fitness, health, and sobriety tips.
“The reason we’re on this earth, anyone who’s been through hard struggle and great pain, it’s because you were supposed to overcome it. Motherfuckers won’t really commit to shit unless they have some skin in the game and something on the line, that’s why I started coaching.” Chris said.
