The Work That Never Stops
After becoming a mom at the age of 16, Gracie Delk is raising a four year old and seven year old all by herself. She works full time for both the 998 hotline and LifeWorks BG in order to provide for her kids, while also attending WKU full time online.
After picking up her two boys from school, Gracie sets them up with a painting activity so she can grab a quick bite to eat. "This is my first meal all day" Gracie said. She says she has so much to do that finding a time to eat is hard to do.
From left, Tucker (7) and Maverick (4) love to hangout with each other after school. One of their favorite things to do is swing on Tucker's bed as if it was monkey bars. During this time Gracie takes the opportunity to get some laundry done and even take a quick power nap.
As a single mom, Gracie often has a very full schedule. She works full time for the 998 hotline at night and Life skills BG on Tuesdays and some weekends. On top of that she takes her son Maverick to therapy every Thursday and her son Tucker is a member of a local baseball team. ""Definitely not how I expected to become a mom, but I’m giving them everything I got," she said.
When Maverick was born he suffered from oxygen deprivation. Due to this, he has trouble moving and working the right side of his body and Gracie often has to help him change his clothes and do other everyday tasks. However, Maverick is in multiple therapies to help with this and has gone from having no functionality in his right hand to being able to pick things up and move them with his fingers. "I'm so proud him. He works so hard in all his therapies and has been making such strides in progress," Gracie said.
Maverick loves to spend time with his mom and help out whenever he can. Gracie agrees to let him help with chores even if this means the task takes a little longer. One such task is making Tucker's bed and putting all of his stuffed animals back. Maverick's job was to throw all of the stuffed animals up onto the bed but he often missed and they ended up somewhere else entirely.
After they finish their dinner, Maverick and Tucker are allowed a little bit of Ipad time as Gracie prepares their bath. One of their favorite games to play together is Roblox.
Gracie currently attends Western Kentucky University online where she is majoring in social work. She says she hopes to one day get a job that makes more money so she can give her two boys the best life possible and one day become a foster mother.
As a single mom, Gracie says she does not have a lot of time to get school work done. Maverick does not like to leave his mothers side so that makes getting work done even harder. "He loves to push all of the buttons on my computer and say what does this do what does this do," Gracie said. This results in Gracie writing essays with Maverick right by her side the whole time.
Gracie said she never planned to be a single mom, but now that she is, she does everything she can to give them the best life possible. She loves her boys and will do anything she can to make them happy. Doing simple chores like washing the dishes is one way they spend time together.
